FAQs

FAQ Departments
How will I know I am performing well?

You will receive a 6 monthly appraisal with your Line Manager, where you will discuss your performance.

What college will I attend?

Depending on the apprenticeship scheme, we currently work with NA College, Spire Road, Washington, Gateshead College, Team Valley, Gateshead and New College Durham, Durham.

What are the age requirements?

You would need to be 16 years of age to start in September.

There is no maximum age requirement, however please be aware all apprentices attend college together.

Do I get a uniform?

Yes - this will be provided at our Welcome Evening.

Where will I work?

Depending on which apprenticeship scheme you have applied for this will be provided once area allocation has been confirmed for each department.

What shifts will I work?

Most Departments are working two shifts - days 7:00 or 7:15hrs – 15:18 or 15:33hrs / lates 16:35 or 16:50hrs – 0:53 or 01:08hrs, with an earlier finish on Fridays (these times are subject to change).

Under 18s will finish late shift at 11pm and a taxi home can be arranged for those who do not drive.

Please note some departments are still working three shifts (days / lates / nights) and maintenance are currently on a 12 hr shift pattern.

Are there opportunities for promotion?

From your first day of employment with us, you are eligible to apply for promotion when a vacancy arises.  All promotion opportunities are advertised internally, with applications taken through our internal intranet.  We also encourage lateral moves within departments to enable employees to gain additional skills and experience.  More information about our internal recruitment process can be found on our Applying Internally page.

Is there an annual salary increase?

As a company, we work with our Company Council and Unite as our recognized trade union, to negotiate and agree an annual pay deal every 2 years.  Any agreed increase is then applied to salaries in January.  In addition to this, we operate a performance related pay system, whereby employees receive a merit payment linked to their annual appraisal.

If you are on a trainee scheme or apprenticeship, the performance related pay system is slightly different, and more information can be found on the Apprentice Scheme pages.

What should I wear to Interview?

Our formal panel interviews are held in our on site recruitment centre.  For these interviews we would expect you to be appropriately dressed in smart office attire, such as a suit and tie.

If you have been invited for an engineering 'Walk & Talk', you may be advised to wear safety footwear.
