EV36Zero:
the future of Nissan

We are driving towards a more sustainable future, using our purpose, products and technology to deliver the future of mobility today.

EV36Zero will transform Nissan Sunderland into a flagship EV hub, bringing together electric vehicles, renewable energy and battery production, and setting a blueprint for the future of the automotive industry. The project brings together a new electric crossover for our plant, the AESC gigafactory, and the renewable electric microgrid – forming part of Ambition 2030, Nissan’s journey towards carbon neutrality.

What is EV36Zero?

The EV36Zero hub in Sunderland – Nissan’s blueprint for future manufacturing – will consist of three electric vehicles (EVs), three gigafactories and up to £3bn investment – securing the future of our employees and wider supply chain.  The EV36Zero project puts our Sunderland plant, Britain’s biggest ever car factory, at the heart of our future vision. It means our UK team will be designing, engineering and manufacturing the vehicles of the future, driving us towards an all-electric future for Nissan in Europe.

The 3 pillars of EV36Zero

Production of three 100% all-electric vehicles

Not only does the transformational project include future all-electric versions of Nissan’s flagship Qashqai and JUKE crossovers, but the next-generation Nissan LEAF, the car that dared to spark the electrification of the automotive industry.

The AESC gigafactory

Our long-standing battery partners, AESC are investing in building a second Gigafactory adjacent to our Sunderland plant. Already supplying batteries for the Nissan LEAF, AESC will now provide next-generation battery technology for Nissan vehicles.

A 100% renewable energy microgrid

The microgrid represents an infrastructure project that’s the first of its kind in the UK. In total, the microgrid aims to reduce our carbon footprint by 55,000 tonnes per year, supporting Nissan’s wider Ambition 2030 carbon reduction programme.

Ambition 2030

Nissan aims to become a truly sustainable company, driving towards a cleaner, safer, and more inclusive world. The vision supports our goal to be carbon neutral across the life cycle of our products by fiscal year 2050.
