A highly specialised area where safety is king and precision is key

To thrive in the casting manufacturing process you’ll need to keep a cool head in a hot environment. Flourish in Castings and the opportunities are endless for those who are willing to put in the hard work.

ANTHONY

CASTINGS STAND-IN TEAM LEADER Manufacturing Staff

“I’d never worked in the automotive industry before I came to Nissan, but I got the training and support from I needed to succeed from day one.”

Anthony came to Nissan with a background in aviation, in search of a new career and opportunities. His first day in Body Shop was daunting but with plenty of support and training from his supervisors and colleagues he was soon hooked by the challenging, fast-paced environment. When an opportunity came up to work in the casting manufacturing process, Anthony seized the chance to try something new. It’s complex work which requires an engineering-level of precision and quality, but Anthony once again received the training he needed to feel confident and safe. His hard work and drive to succeed was rewarded when he was asked to support his section’s Team Leader, and now he’s on a pathway to be a permanentTeam Leader himself.

Castings at Nissan Sunderland is fundamentally a foundry. Using raw materials, sand and aluminium, we produce aluminium cylinder heads for Nissan and Renault. We mix the sand with a resin to create a solid-shaped sand core, then melt aluminium at 750˚C and pour it into the casting furnace, which creates an aluminium cylinder head. The sand is removed and the cylinder head then is prepared for the next stage of the process, Unit Machining.

There are four key areas in Castings, each requiring a specialist set of skills:

  • Core – producing the sand core
  • Melting – melting of the aluminium ingot
  • Casting – forming the cylinder head
  • Finishing – removing the sand core pack and first-stage dressing of the cylinder head
